26. Boezemfuncties

Net als de Leidsevaart behoren de grachten van Haarlem tot de Rijnlands boezem. De Kagerplassen waar we zijn geweest, de Ringvaart en het Spaarne maken ook deel uit van die boezem. Het waterpeil in de boezem varieert van -0,61 tot -0,64 NAP. De boezem heeft meer dan één functie. Hij wordt niet alleen gebruikt om overtollig water uit de polders af te voeren naar het buitenwater, hij wordt ook gebruikt als zoetwatervoorraad. In droge tijden leidt Rijnland water vanuit de boezem naar de verschillende polders. De kunst is om geen zoet water weg te pompen uit de boezem terwijl je dit een week later misschien wel hard nodig hebt. Rijnland heeft een team van peilbeheerders en watersysteembeheerders die samen zorgdragen voor een optimaal peilbeheer. Het weer in de gaten houden en vooruitdenken is voor hen heel belangrijk.
