6. Molen De Adriaan

Deze prachtige windmolen is al sinds 1778 bepalend voor de Haarlemse skyline. De geschiedenis van Haarlem begint zo’n duizend jaar geleden. De gunstige ligging aan het Spaarne en de oude landweg door Holland bracht de stad welvaart. Grachten, muren en torens werden gebouwd ter verdediging. De Adriaan is gebouwd op de resten van de Goe^ Vrouwtoren, een oude verdedigingstoren. Hij werd gebouwd door de Amsterdamse ondernemer Adriaan de Boois, die er jarenlang turfsteen tot tras maalde. Latere eigenaren maalden er onder andere tabak en koren. Op zaterdagmiddag 23 april 1932 was heel Haarlem in rep en roer. De Adriaan stond in brand! Ondanks snel optreden van de Haarlemse brandweer bleef van de molen maar weinig over. De Haarlemmers lieten het er niet bij zitten. Al een dag na de brand organiseerden ze een inzamelingsactie voor een nieuwe Adriaan. In 2002, zeventig jaar later, is het eindelijk zover. Haarlem heeft zijn Adriaan terug
