5. Het Spaarne

Oorspronkelijk was het Spaarne een verbinding tussen het Haarlemmermeer en het IJ. Ook na de aanleg van de Spaarndammerdijk (als bescherming tegen water van het IJ) bleef het Spaarne een belangrijke scheepvaartroute. Daarnaast is het Spaarne belangrijk voor de afwatering van het boezemwater in het noordelijke beheergebied van Rijnland. Al varend door het Haarlemse Spaarne passeren we elf bruggen, waarvan één spoorbrug. Gaandeweg verandert de naam van het Spaarne. In Spaarndam beginnen we op het Noorder Buiten Spaarne, in het centrum wordt dat het Binnen Spaarne en na de Langebrug tot aan de Ringvaart heet deze oude rivier Zuider Buiten Spaarne. Het Spaarne is onderdeel van Rijnlands boezem.
