21. Bollenteelt en peilbeheer

De Leidsevaart voert ons door de bollenstreek. Hier worden vooral veel hyacinten, tulpen en narcissen geteeld. De bollenteelt in deze regio begon ooit ten westen van Haarlem. Aan het begin van de negentiende eeuw nam de teelt echter een enorme vlucht. Er werd uitgeweken richting Heemstede en Bennebroek, later naar Hillegom, Lisse, Sassenheim, Voorhout, Warmond, Noordwijkerhout en Noordwijk. Ook de boeren hier stapten over op bloembollenteelt. De massaproductie van bloembollen kwam pas goed op gang nadat in 1880 het stoomgemaal bij Katwijk in gebruik was genomen. Hierdoor kon de waterstand beter gereguleerd worden. Ook nu nog luistert het waterpeil in de sloten bijzonder nauw. De bollen verlangen niet alleen per soort, maar zelfs per seizoen een exact waterpeil. Daarom zijn er tal van peilvakken met elk weer hun eigen bemaling. Het peilbeheer vergt constante aandacht van de peilbeheerders van Rijnland. Zij doen hun werk in samenspraak met de bollentelers.
