15. Havensluis

Na de Mallegatsluis zie je aan de linkerkant ook nog de restanten van de Havensluis. Deze is aangelegd in 1615 door de stad Gouda om invloed van eb en vloed in de stad te verminderen. Achter de Havensluis lag de Donkere sluis, mogelijk al gebouwd in de 11e eeuw en daarmee de oudste sluis van Gouda. Samen met de in de stad gelegen Amsterdamse sluis, ook wel Amsterdams Verlaat genoemd, werd deze gebruikt om de stad richting Amsterdam te kunnen verlaten. Naast de Havensluis is goed te zien dat er stenen muren zijn aangebracht om hoog water op de Hollandse IJssel te kunnen keren. Deze muren doen nog steeds dienst als hoogwaterkering. De openingen in de muur, zogenoemde coupures kunnen met behulp van balken dichtgezet worden.
