11. De Lisserpoelmolen

We varen inmiddels ter hoogte van Lisse en Sassenheim. De poldermolen aan SZ is de Lisserpoelmolen. Hij werd gebouwd in 1676 en is nog altijd inzetbaar. Bijvoorbeeld bij extreme wateroverlast of wanneer het gemaal niet functioneert. Bij de bouw werd de molen uitgerust met een vijzel; een lange draaiende schroef die water van laag naar hoog verplaatst. De keuze voor een vijzel was destijds bijzonder, want vrijwel alle poldermolens werden toen nog uitgerust met een scheprad. De ‘Lisserpoel’ is nu wereldwijd de oudste nog bestaande poldermolen die al vanaf de bouw werd uitgerust met een vijzel. De vijzel is elf meter lang en de molen wordt in bedrijf gehouden door een vrijwillig molenaar. De Rijnlandse Molenstichting zorgt ervoor dat de molen in goede staat blijft. Deze stichting, werkzaam in Rijnlands gebied, bezit 46 poldermolens. Dit zijn allemaal rijksmonumenten die nog steeds kunnen malen. De meesten fungeren dan ook als hulpgemaal. Als het water te hoog komt helpen ze mee om overtollig water uit de polder te pompen. Zo houden we onze voeten droog!
